Just as scientific research is commonly performed in collaboration, so too is the
documentation of research. Knowing how rigorously their material might be reviewed
by journal editors before it is accepted into print, most researchers ask their
peers or mentors to critique their draft material before they finalize it for
submission. Thus, all research documentation is really the product of many
hands: the authors' and their peer or mentor reviewers.
Esther M. Zimmer Lederberg was frequently asked to review draft research papers,
and much valued for the thoroughness of her attention when reviewing, and the
quality of her suggestions on how that material might be improved. (For further
information, see Anecdote #22 at http://www.esthermlederberg.com/Anecdotes.html.)
The following pages follow the creation of a research paper by Richard Soffer. This
paper was submitted for review to Esther M. Zimmer Lederberg who then also coordinated
further reviews by Ann Ganesan, Dale Kaiser, and Gene Nester.
